Most people know that dogs can hear and smell things that humans can’t, but did you know that there are things you can’t see that your dog can see?
Well, dogs have the amazing ability to see ultraviolet light, meaning their world is just as tender as ours. Because puppies can see ultraviolet light, they see a lot more than either you or I can.
Here are 11 things that will make your dog’s world a bigger and brighter place than ours.
1. Banana stains
As you see a loaf of banana bread in the making, your dog sees something even more psychedelic: spots that glow blue. But does he eat bananas when he’s spotty? It just depends on how he likes bananas.
2. Black light anything
Tattoos, T-shirts, and Toys – If described as “black light,” your dog doesn’t need black light to see it. For him, it’s just…light.
3. Layers in the paint
Your dog sees every artist’s mistake and change of heart, again, because of his ability to see UV light. Maybe bring him to a flea market next time and use his insight into dogs to help you spot real (and fake) masterpieces.
4. Over the night sky
One of the most incredible things for city people to witness in the countryside is the night sky. There are a lot of visible stars out there! (Stupid light pollution.) Yet your dog sees more stars and orbs in town than you do when you go out to the sticks.
5. Money security features
Your dog will be better at spotting counterfeit money than you are – if he has any idea what to look for. It’s not like he understands what money is. Treats are thought to grow on trees.
6. Human teeth
If you use a lot of fluoride-based products, your dog will probably confuse you with the Cheshire Cat because, to him, it looks like your teeth are glowing. Same if you have dental dental medications.
7. Quinine
Fingers crossed you will never suffer from malaria, as quinine is used to treat it. You probably know it from the tonic water instead. For dogs, this extract glows blue because of — you guessed it — UV rays.
8. Lint and hair
You know how you can pick up a jacket and not notice anything on it? But, gradually, as you go about your day, dander and pet hair start to show up. Well, your dog knew those suckers were on all along because of his ability to see UV light and they just didn’t tell you. what a jerk.
9. Pee signs
Well, obviously we can see a fresh puddle of urine on the floor or floor. What your dog is seeing is leftover material that hasn’t been completely cleaned from something. (Yuck.) That’s because urine also stains along the UV wavelength.
10. Their farts
Is that true? Yes, really. (Oh, and this one has to do with UV light.)
11. Earth’s magnetic field
Your furry friend aligns himself with the north-south axis every time he pees. This is because he can see the Earth’s magnetic field. Talk about metaphysical
