Best for Neighbor Dads on a Budget: Bacon

Dogs like gross things — if you know what bully sticks are, you understand. My pup LOVES beef trachea, and it's a huge bonus that they taste full of glucosamine and chondroitin for joint health. It will usually take her at least half an hour to get through one of these; It will last longer if you smear the peanut butter a little on the inside so you have to shake it off first.

On the stink front, I can confidently say that I have never encountered a stinky smell, although some complain about the smell. They tend to be a little oily or waxy as a barter and are best given on the kitchen floor or outside. I’ve never had problems with trachea staining the carpet. Like many chews, these can also be treated as “dental chews” because they act like a very strange looking toothbrush.

Why we love it:

  • – Contains glucosamine and chondroitin for joint health
  • – A good source of protein
  • – Shaped like a tube, so it can be stuffed with other goodies

Better for dogs to watch their weight BENEBONE Scream

attention! These are not edible - I repeat, Benebones are made of crazy strong nylon and flavored with food-grade bacon, peanut butter, and grilled chicken. While these "nibbles" Strictly meant to be chewed and not swallowed, the dogs in my family totally ditch them. And get this, they've been around for weeks. Plus, no calories.

The wishbone-shaped option is specially designed for a secure grip by paws, and the dental chew version has a double-ended finish for optimal cleaning. Both are available in mini and regular sizes with the former also being sold in jumbo format. As with any snack or toy, be sure to remove it from your dog if he appears to be eating it or if he is ready for a replacement.

Why we love it:

  • – Sticks around much longer than chewing food
  • It comes in different sizes
  • Different flavor options

Chews we love Water buffalo horns

Like stick horns and other bone chews, buffalo horns are low in calories, high in protein, and last a very long time. Fortunately, unlike cooked bones (which I don't recommend giving to your dog, no exceptions), these won't splinter as you chew.

Another great benefit – there is no smell! I’ve never had carpet stains or any issues with water buffalo horns, and it stays “alive” in our home for weeks to months. As always, never leave your dog alone with any type of treat or chew.

Himalayan Yak Chew

Yak's milk, cow's milk, salt, and lime juice are the only ingredients in these ancient Himalayan meals. They wear out over time as your dog nibbles and are good for keeping a plate at bay, but when they get small enough (down to an inch or so) you'll want to take them away. Don't just throw it in the trash though! If you pop a patty in the microwave for 30 seconds, it will pop like a piece of popcorn and get nice and crunchy. It will be hot, so don't give it to the dog right away; Once it cools down, they should be able to make it as a regular treat.

Raw meat palm bones

These are a tad tough to ship due to how frozen and crunchy they are, but any local pet store should have their freezer stocked with vacuum sealed marrow bones. My personal picks are the beef marrow bones from Primal Pet Foods. For a dog new to raw snacks, I would limit him to one bone a week, though Primal advises that you offer up to two.

These raw bones are not meant to go away, and that means once the dog has scraped all the marrow and scraps of meat left on the bone, discard the bone itself. Unlike a “stuffed” bone from the pet store, you won’t want one left raw long after the fact. To get out of anything and everything, my pup can do backflips to these.

Buy here: Check your local pet store or call ahead to see if they have their own freezers stocked!

Now you can take a deep breath and catch the Netflix show you’ve been deeming appropriate to watch, and you won’t have an excited nose sticking your leg in to play. An occupied dog is definitely a happy one – go for it and Chews Chew you!
