Imagine a place where the sun shines year-round, the average annual temperature is 73 degrees, and more than 900 dogs with breed names like “Fatty German Dobernauzer” and “Fire-Tailed Border Cocker” roam freely across the lush landscape.
Sound like heaven? Well believe it or not, it is here on Earth! Territorio de Zaguates, or “Land of the Strays” is a privately funded and operated organization in Costa Rica.

Every single dog at this unique shelter is available for adoption. Each is given a name, as well as assigned their own personal “breed” based on their unique characteristics.
In the Territorio de Zaguates unique traits are celebrated in an attempt to dispel the myth that purebreds are somewhat more valuable. Experts believe that putting a positive wave around their mixed status helps these special dogs find homes.

When a potential adopter is interested in a rescue from the Land of the Beaches, the search isn’t limited to the thousands of photos online. The public is welcome to come out onto the gorgeous, sprawling property and meet the dogs in person!
Volunteers exercise the pups by driving frequent scenic drives, and potential guides are welcome to participate. Offers the opportunity to interact with dogs in a stress-free environment that allows consumers to get to know and bond with their new pet.

Teretorio de Zaguate dogs spend most of their time basking in the sun and enjoying the cool Costa Rican breeze, but they also have access to a modern indoor facility. The living area features comfortable beds for all the puppies as well as feeding and bathing stations. Fresh water tubs are located throughout the property to keep active dogs hydrated.

When you visit the Land of Beaches there is no pressure to adopt them. It is a no kill shelter, the dogs are well cared for and happy. However, I imagine it is hard not to fall in love while walking with these gorgeous, friendly puppies through their free-run paradise!
Before you book your trip to this energetic Costa Rican wonderland, be sure to check out their Facebook page for upcoming public hikes as well as many photos of candy bars to count on.
