African blindfold lovebirds are very curious, inquisitive birds. They often have very charming personalities, and can be sociable to enjoy time with humans, although this requires serious daily commitment. And whether you want to handle them or not, African eyed lovebirds are wonderful birds that reproduce with relative ease when kept properly. It thrives when kept either singly or in a colony of birds, and the colonies often chatter and chirp to each other, which is a beautiful sound.
Step 1
Make sure your lovebirds have enough space. Lovebirds also love to fly and move around, always providing as much space as possible. Your lovebirds will be happier in a spacious environment that allows them to live naturally. The minimum space for a lovebird is 24 inches (60 cm) wide by 14 inches (35 cm) deep by 30 inches (76 cm). Two birds require double the space.
Step 2
Record the temperature continuously for a few days. You can buy electronic heat trackers that will do this for you, or write down the temperature every hour. Lovebirds can thrive in different temperatures, but drafts and drastic changes in temperature can affect their happiness and health. If you notice that the temperature is inconsistent, consider moving the cage.
Step 3
Feed your bird a varied diet. Lovebird pellets should make up about 70 percent of a bird’s diet, as it is formulated to contain vitamins and nutrients vital to a bird’s health. However, these should be supplemented with leafy greens, carrots and bananas. Lovebirds should not be fed chocolate, avocados, fruit seeds, caffeine or alcohol, as these substances can cause serious health problems.
Step 4
Change your lovebirds’ water daily with filtered, non-chlorine water. Try to do this at the same time each day. Birds that suffer from drought or have limited access to fresh water will not breed.
Step 5
Provide toys to keep the birds entertained. Suitable bird toys for lovebirds are available at most pet stores, and usually feature mirrors, bells, or ropes. Lovebirds love to chew and find adorable mirrors, so these toys will keep them stimulated and healthy.
Step 6
Offer the birds a bath two or three times a week. Bird baths are available at most pet stores, and if you put them in the cage, the birds should bathe themselves.
Step 7
Provide nesting box. A cockatiel nesting box is ideal, as the larger size gives the chicks more time to develop. Fill the bottom of the enclosure with a 2-inch layer of suitable nesting material, such as dry straw, shredded newspaper, or white non-woven towels.
Step 8
Give the birds time to breed. If you have checked all of the above, your birds will be in good shape and should be happy to breed. This can take some time, however, depending on the individual bird.
